Wood shingles made from red cedar, is a very popular (and sometimes required by historical code) roofing material on Cape Cod and the Islands. Wood shingles are machine sawn and then sorted by grade. They are very distinctive looking and will weather quickly to a more mellow color.

Cedar roofs have withstood wind tests in excess of 130 miles per hour without damage.

The Cedar Shake & Shingle Bureau conducted laboratory controlled wind tests to qualify and confirm the evidence of wood roofing's incredible performance demonstrated during Hurricane Andrew. On August 24, 1992, Hurricane Andrew battered Florida's Dade County with approximately 140 mph winds and peak gusts up to 160 mph. A point to consider: Some local building codes limit the use of wood shingles and shakes because of concerns about fire resistance. Many wood shingles and shakes only have Class C fire ratings or no ratings at all. However, Class A fire ratings are available for certain wood shingle products that incorporate a factory-applied, fire-resistant treatment.
